Learn What Cards to Avoid in Barbu

The beauty of Barbu is the fact that it is seven card games in one. I, this was featured in my games magazine article of three ears ago. Barbu's components consist of games that you are most familiar with. For example, we have a game called Mellow. And this is a game in which the object is to avoid taking tricks. You don't want to take tricks, if you take tricks you're penalized. So it's a basically an avoidance game, hence it has a little bit of a relationship to the game of hearts. There's a game called Queens, similar to the Queen of Spades in Hearts, except that all four suits get into play. The idea is to avoid taking Queens. Some of the players jokingly call them Queeny-beanies. But again, you do everything you can to avoid taking Queens, because you?re penalized with negative points for taking Queens. Then we have the Heart King, Barbu, that's the name of the game. Whoever has the Heart King in their hand does everything that can do to dump it, because if you take the Heart King you lose thirty points. That's a big penalty, that's the largest individual penalty in the game. So I often think of the Heart King as the super-sized Queen of Spades.
