Defense in Bid Whist with Kitty. The defense really doesn't have much of a chance to get into the hand here. Particularly if the declarer or the name of the trump is running out some rip snorting trump suit. However, they do have the opportunity to give their partner a little bit of direction. Let's look at this scenario. The declarer has named diamonds in an uptown bid. Pretty impressive looking diamond suit and let's just say his partner even has the ace. They're on the six level. They're just bidding strong. They've got a good hand. They start with the jokers and so forth. By the time they get to the second or third round of diamonds one of these defenders is going to be fresh out of diamonds. What can they do? Does he just throw cards, willy nilly, randomly. No, you try to tell your partner what suit that you have. Your best, in this case, high card end. So let's just say that he's out of diamonds after the second round. He's going to throw the ten of clubs on the third diamond. That tells his partner that the only descent card that he has in his hand or maybe he'll have another suit but he can't show two, is clubs. He's telling his partner, I'm discarding a club the first opportunity. If you get on the lead over here, come back in clubs. Supposing that this person over here is out of diamonds. He also throws, he can spare the jack it's equal to the ten, he throws a heart. He's telling his partner my entry's in hearts. So, if one of them gets on the lead with an ace at least they'll know what suit to come back to partner in. So when you make a discard in defense, whether you're playing uptown or no trump, downtown or even no trump, you want to try and give your partner some indication as to what to keep. Throw him a card that helps lead him that way. So your best suit.
