How to Play the Second Half of "Broken" on the Guitar

JOE WILES: This is segment two of Seether's "Broken." Let's take a look at the rest of the chord arrangement. Now, we left off about here--and we repeat. Now, we do that whole series three times in a row. We just go back and forth between those two chords. The last one is a D chord, okay? We're going to hit the open D string with our thumb and the high E string, of course, with our ring finger. Both of those open, we're going to hammer down our middle finger onto the 2nd fret. Now, you'll notice my index finger and ring finger are already positioned for the D chord besides that. Now, my index finger is on the 2nd fret of the G string. My ring finger is on the 3rd fret of the B string. And to start out, I'm hitting my high string--high E string open. I'm going to hammer on my middle finger to the 2nd fret. Watch how this works--okay? You're just going to hit those open two. Then over here my B string to my G string. Watch this hand closely as I work through this last set of notes on this D chord. Okay? Do you see how I did that? I actually used my pinkie to go to the 3rd fret of the high E-string and then pull off back to the 2nd fret. Now, watch closely as I go through my picking hand and what I do with my left hand here, with my middle finger hammering onto the 2nd fret and my pinkie pulling off the 3rd fret onto the 2nd fret of the high E string. All that action occurs on the high E string--okay? Slowly, again, this whole no progression sounds like this. It's a little tricky. Put all together, it sounds like this. Here we go. That's a really good finger picking exercise. I suggest you work on it a lot and try to get it down, because you're using muscles that you may not normally use on your right hand. And getting that stuff down is really cool, okay? In our next segment, we're going to take a look at number 30. I'll see you there.
