As in any fresh deal card game, Barbu being absolutely no exception. You are going to have a luck factor, and there are players who will just consistently get great hands. Anybody can pick up a nine card solid hand and a trump call and say okay I'm going to call tricks and rip off forty-five points. Somebody can pick up all low cards and nullos and say okay I'm going to call nullos and not take a trick or maybe take one or two tricks. They can pick up safe hands. They can get lucky because this person happened to call queens and they happen to have a safe hand. That is a random factor, you can not control luck of the deal. I don't care what card game it is. This is why in poker. I often think of poker, even though you have great players. It's still in a game where an amateur player does have a chance to win. You don't see that in chess, and you usually don't see that in bridge. Skill. Where's the skill in Barbu. Well, skill is in counting cards, skill is in tracking cards, skill is the ability to work with opponents, and for the common cause getting the high scoring player. Skill is the ability to make that right decision. Skill is the ability to manage your hand such as last two, to time the hand out, to count the hand out, or look at the discards. So there is a great skill factor in Barbu, particularly in games like last two and fan-tan and a good player tends to shine. This is why a lot of the Barbu players have gone on to become very accomplished bridge players and a lot of the bridge players excel in Barbu. It's more than just a coincidence. Luck will carry you to a degree, you can't count on it. Skill will take you all the way and I don't care what endeavor you're in. So, it's a good game to learn, it's a good game to play, and it's a good game to have fun.
