Learn Some of the Basic Tricks in Barbu

Tricks, tricks is basically what it's all about. What it says, you want to win tricks. You want to name the trump suit. You want to have a hand, we could spread out a hand that has ace, king, queen, jack, ten of some suit, it doesn't matter. You might have a long seven card suit, ace, ten, nine, eight, six, five, three, deuce, whatever. You want to take as many tricks, you want to declare a trump that's at least five cards long. If you have a shorter trump suit, or five cards then you're obviously going to have to have more tricks in the side suits. You want to come out of tricks with at least five of the tricks. That's the bare minimum because there's sixty-five points out there for the grabbing and if you don't take at least twenty-five it's a bomb. I mean, do you want to get out of there with ten points? Two tricks? Yuck! So the idea is, you want to call tricks if you're short of at least five, preferably six tricks. No you're not going to take all thirteen, but there will be times in a game of Barbu that you're served up thirty, you know forty points, fifty points. Great! If you can take ten tricks out of thirteen, Great! But the most important thing is the more tricks that you take, the less tricks the opponent takes, less of these five point bundles that you're going to be giving out. You definitely do not want to call, you don't want to be forced into the end of the hand having to call tricks, and with only two or three tricks in your hand. So, take the option, use tricks up if it's available, and obviously if your hand has a lot of trick taking potential, you're not going to be looking at a king of hearts. You're not going to be looking at last two. You're not going to be looking at hearts, or queens. So use the tricks option if you are assured a five, preferably six or even tricks. Get out of there for your thirty five points, and be happy.
