You have declared the bid and you've named, say hearts, as a pound. Your job is to make your contract. You want to try and get into your partners hand. You want to ensure that you make your contract because the bids in Strait Whist, especially when they get up to three and four, especially four and five, are very tough to make. You have to have a tremendous, what we call strength in the hand. One of the most important things in the hand as far as suit play. We're talking any one of the suits you've declared a suit for a contract, it's called the fit. It doesn't mean your angry it means how does your hand mesh together with your partners. That's a very important consideration. Watch the cards that are played. You don't want to bleed trump out of your partner. If you play the ace and king and trump and one of the opponents has dropped a queen and the other one goes off suit and there's still one more trump out there. It's pretty obvious that his queen indicates that's he's out of trump and he's out of trump anyway. Leave partners trump there, you may need that for a later situation. Your partner will also try to give you discards. A lot of people play, that the first suit discarded when the partner goes off the suit that you're leading tells you that's the suit he wants you to come back in. The idea, it's not an individuals game, it's not cut throat whist. You're trying to get into partners hand, work with your partner, and it's important that you remember which cards are good. It's up to your partner and you to remember which ace is which king, kings, queens have been played. So if a jack is good and you need that for your hand, it's very embarrassing when your partner leaves and off suit jack and you forget the ace, king, queen have been played and the trumps have already been pulled and you trump it with your last trump and then you wind up loosing some deuce that you forgot that the jack was good. So remember the cards that are good, ensure your contract and work with your partner.
