How to Heat Oil for Making Biodiesel

CRAYDON BLAIR: My name is Craydon Blair from Utah Biodiesel Supply, and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to tell you how to heat oil to get ready to make biodiesel. First thing you want to do is you want to get 500 milliliters of vegetable oil, canola, corn oil, it really doesn't matter. You just need to put 500 milliliters in here. I've picked up this beaker at a local store and it's got a marking on it, right there, and so I just filled it up. Then, on a heated stove or on a heated surface, I poured that oil into something that can heat. This can be a pan on a stove on fairly high heat. Oil does heat fairly quick. You don't want to heat it up too much. This is a hot plate which I use, but basically, you just want to put it on a stove and kinda like making doughnuts. If you ever made doughnuts where you heat it up or made French fries, we're doing the same thing. We're just heating the oil up. We want to hit 130 degrees. You can get a candy thermometer and you can put it in here and you can check to see what your oil temperature is. You kinda want to stir it around to make sure it doesn't get too bad but your goal is to get your oil on your stove to 130 degrees.
