Tips for Keeping a Dog in the Yard

Hi, this is Ryan with Expert Village and I am going to teach you how to keep your dog in the yard so that he doesn't get hit by cars. Even if your dog is off leash in your front yard, it is going to be important that he knows that as soon as he gets to the end of the sidewalk or the where the street begins that there is a boundary there that he is not allowed to cross. And, so what you will do is that you will want to have a situation where people are walking by or cars are going by where he will be distracted. You will need to put him in that situation so that you can correct the behavior while you are there. Butters, come here, hey hey. Come here, Come here. Butters, come here. Hey. Sit. And so what I would do is get him in this position and the important thing to do is to correct him is as soon as he takes a step forward, that is when you correct him. You don't wait until he is running in the street, going all crazy, you have to correct him as soon as you see the first sign of disobedience. So, it is going to be kind-of hard for him since I have already trained him not to run into the street, but if the dog were to run into the street, I would simply take my hand and hit him in the neck. It is not like a hard push, it is more just like a gentle tap so that he knows what he did is wrong. A dog in the wild, if he disobeys the pack leader, the pack leader would bite him in the neck. We are not actually going to bite him, but our hand is going to act like the mouth of a dog and will basically be biting him. And, if he takes a step into the street, the important thing to do is make sure he goes back to exactly where he was. So, he stepped forward then I am going to take him back to exactly where he was and make him sit down. And it is not necessary to really talk to him at that point. You just need to make a noise, a sound.. say hey, say no, and give him a simple touch and the touch is what is going to correct the behavior.
