Lubricating Distributor Cap Plugs & Wires
Hi! My name is Nathan McCullough on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, we’re going to talk about the appropriate lubrication of the plug sockets on your distributor cap and the wires. What you’re looking for is dielectric grease. It can be found in any automotive part store, sometimes even in Wal-Mart and Meyer. What it does is it seals the contacts from ambient air. Air outside the vehicle or anywhere for that matter has moisture in it, and overtime that minute amount of moisture and electricity will cause corrosion. In other words, premature failure of the connections inside here. Pretty simple to do. Just take your grease, unscrew the cap. I like to put to it all in the distributor. Just stick it in here and give it a good squeeze. Go all the way around, there, there, and there; the cap is done. That’s the lubrication portion right there. It may be a good idea as well to lubricate the spark plug terminals down inside here. They’re inside the engine, less moisture gets to them. However, engine oil overtime can seep down inside what they call the spark plug galley. There is nowhere for it to go, and as soon as the level inside reaches the electrical contact, that will ground the electrical portion of this cylinder and it won’t fire, for a result in a dead cylinder. What you want to do is give the end of this terminal a good shot of grease. That will prevent the oil from being able to get inside of it and will dramatically extend the life of your spark plug wires and the rest of the ignition system.
