Hey! I am Mark Black and welcome to expertvillage.com. We are going to be talking about vocal performance. Stepwise exercises build facility and skill in other words if I want to be able to sing lyrics or sing… I want to be able to sing like that, I need to do stepwise exercises. Both things are important, but an exercise like this… or the all time favorite… that is not a good way to build range because once I hit up here or here and when… every half step of that I am feeling… so I feel all of that and it is harder to do psychologically yes, physically yes but mostly in the head. So what you should do is do arpeggios to build range. Again both kinds of exercises have benefits for you but arpeggios are going to build your range, and you got a lot more range. Certain schools of thinking would say basically we are trying to discover your voice, but as to me that is like Arnold saying “I am going to discover if I am a body builder.” No, he went and built his body and that is what you are doing with exercises, you are saying I have done or had or whatever I had a weenie voice and I want to make it a massive and amazing excellent voice and I can work on it and build it and so okay so maybe you won’t get a seven octave range, you can just be content with a four octave range. So I definitely believe in students to prove it that you can dramatically increase your range and the way to do is arpeggios, so I mostly want to encourage you about that, there is a lot more range for yourself, than you may be able to think of.
