Multiple Earners & Married Couples: W-4 Tax Form
Now in our first example James Smith already have a job and now his wife Mary has got a job as well. So Mary is completing her W-4 and she remembers that James' already claimed himself, the 2 children and the child tax credit. So with that in mind she fills out her W-4 with the same as James excepts she puts her name is line 1, her social security number, she is married. When she goes to the worksheet 4 line A she enters 1 for herself and she is going to enter 0 for B because she is not going to try to make any of these claims. C for his spouse, he has already been claimed so that is 0, D for dependents that is 0 cause that is already claimed. Line E,F,G are all 0 cause that does not apply it has been claimed on her husbands W-4. So when we add everything up for h we come up with 1. Mary puts that down here for 1 and at this point she is not claiming any additional amount. So put 0 there. But she knows that her husband has already got a job and she notes right here that if you have more then one job or married or you and your spouse both work and the combine earning of small jobs exceed 40,000, 25,000 if married and that is true in there case. See earners multiply jobs on page 2 to avoid having to little tax withheld. So we need to go to page 2 to see how much extra tax.
