How to Make a Slipknot in Knitting
Hi, I’m Kelsey. I’ve been knitting for 10 years, and I’m a member of several knitting organizations. Before you start knitting at all you have to cast on, and before you cast on, you have to make a slipknot. And in case you’ve forgotten your Boy Scout training on knots, I’m going to show you how you do that. You’re going to take the end of your yarn, it doesn’t really matter which end. Take your fingers like this and loop the yarn over it so it looks like this. Then, what you’re going to want to do is cross one end over to make an X. So now, it should look like this. Now you’ve got a little pincher there in that loop and what you’re going to do is take your pincher, and grab the strand of yarn that lies on the bottom side of the X like this. Once you’ve got the yarn grabbed, you want to pull the loop through the original loop so it looks like this, and pull one end tight. This is a slipknot. It’s called that because you’ve go this loop that slips, and it’s very nice because you can pull it and it disappears. I’m going to do it one more time slowly so you can see. I take my yarn and I drape it over, I bring one end under, and then with my pinchers I grab the bottom end. Once you have that slipknot, take it, put it on your needle, and pull it tight. That’s how you make a slipknot.
