Encourage Healthy Cat Behaviors

Hi! I am Dr. Adrienne Mulligan, I own Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic, and I am here today on behalf of expertvillage.com to talk to you about cat obedience. Now cats have a natural need to scratch and sharpen their nails, and you cannot stop that, it is something the cats desperately have to do. Lot of times they will do it on things you do not want, like the edges of your couch or the arms of your couch. So some things that have been suggested are to cover the edges of your couch with aluminum foil, which is not a very nice surface for them. Cats also don’t like tape, and they don’t like tape on their paws, and one idea might be to put some aluminum foil on it, and put double sided tape in various area, so when they put their feet on it and they get tape on their feet, they go run into the house trying to shake the tape off their feet. So double sided tape can be really nice, and even big pieces of tape with those sticky side up, sitting on some places, so that if they walk on it they get it on their feet and they go running. That’s how I trained mine, mine used to love to help me make the bed, and I would use a pet roller to get the hair off, and discard the rolled, the used pieces of tape, so I would take one and tear up and put it on each of their feet, and they go running off through the house trying to get those off their feet, and leave me alone while I made my bed, and pretty soon they quit bothering me while I was making my bed.
