Questions & AnswersJOE WILES: In this segment, we're continuing our last segments, Blink 182's "Anthem Part Two." Let's take a look at the guitar. All right, after you've done that clean bit that sounds like this. You continue that for a few more phrases. Eventually, when the song kicks in, this is the phrase you'll hear. You're going to put your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, okay? Now, we're going to poise our finger over to the 3rd fret of the D string, getting ready to hammer it down, okay? The picking pattern is going to hit the A string twice. Oh, with the palm mute, by the way. Open D string, hammer down the pinkie. Hit the A string twice again, then use your middle finger for the 2nd fret of the D string. It sounds like this, slowly. I'm going to play that for you again, slowly, okay? Watch my fingers here and watch which direction my pick is going, up or down, okay? Open B, open B again. Now to speed, that same pattern sounds like this. Now, the hardest part about this riff, I think, is the palm muting. The first two notes, any time you hit that A string on the 3rd fret, that's palm muted. Then you let the other one ring out. You'll notice I'm just exaggerating that, but the idea is that you palm mute the first two notes of the phrase every time. Give that a try. It's a great palm muting exercise because you're always lifting back and forth between palm muting and open-clear strings, okay?
