Four on the Floor' Drum Beats

JOEL SIEGEL: Alright. So, we've done our heel down, four on the floor at 85. And what I want to do now is-we'll, up the tempo in a minute but I want to go ahead and practice--we'll go ahead and develop these techniques in concert. We'll go ahead and practice the heel up technique, okay? If you haven't watched before, there's two ways of playing the bass drum and it's--the names imply everything. You can either have your heel down or your heel up, where you're playing with mainly the ball of your foot; heel down, you're playing with the whole bottom surface of your foot. This gets more control, whereas heel up, it will get you more volume and more power. So, let's try the same thing. We're at 85, four on the floor. Here's what it sounds like, heel up. Alright, so try it with me. And again, just like before, if the quarter notes--you don't have enough control to where--you're not playing on the beat, go ahead and just play one and three for now and then on your own go ahead and slow it back down. Get it to where you have nice control and you're getting the sound--you're getting the sound, you're getting control of the sound rather than the bass drum and the pedal. So, let's do it together. Heel up, four on the floor, 85. One, two, ready, play and off. Alright, you're already strives ahead a lot of drummers by just recognizing and exercising both of those techniques.
