JOEL SIEGEL: Alright, so we've done our beat and we've gotten into some exercises, and I just kind of want to talk about exercising and building and progressing in your exercises. Like I said earlier whenever something is posing a challenge to you, first thing to do is just try to slow it down. You'll actually find a lot of times you'll be surprised maybe by something being harder, when you slow it, when you actually slow it down. It'll kind of be the opposite. This is actually a good thing when it happens because it's just something else for you to learn. What it means when you slow it down and it's harder is that you're not actually in control of what's happening basically. You're either relying on things like the weight of the stick, the way that you're griping it. You're relying on the reaction of the stick against the head. There are all sorts of external factors that are controlling the sound that you're getting rather than you being in control. So, if you're playing eighth notes, you want to be able to play eighth notes incredibly slow. Same thing goes for everything else. Your bass drum, if it only feels good at a certain tempo, this is a lot of times the case especially with the bass drum. It's because you're relying on that spring action. You're relying on the tension of the head, the way the beater's reacting with that. So, always be sure, even something isn't hard, maybe slow it down a little bit, just to kind of test yourself. Anyway, the point that I was originally making was you're going to bring stuff back to exercise it to ensure you have that control and as you get a hold on those exercises, you want to go ahead and start to speed them up so you can play faster and faster. This isn't the end, mind you. There's music that's very, very slow, but this is what we're going to work on just speeding up some of those exercises that we did a minute ago.
