Playing Eighth Notes on Drums

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. Let's play some eighth notes. I'm going to take out the syncopation of the metronome 'cause this is probably the kind of sound that you'll have. Here's the alternating sticking, leading with the right hand. While we're looking at it, let's go ahead and do one-handed sticking with the right hand. If I just take that pattern while I was playing on the snare drum and move it to the hi-hat, this is going to be one of the most recognizable sounds in pop music. Just take a listen. One, two, three, four. That's your timekeeping. That's that high pitch that's cutting through--cutting above all the rest of the music to all the other musicians' years in the band, and that's what's keeping the time for everybody. That's what everybody is referencing.
