How to Play a Double High Hat

JOEL SIEGEL: Okay. So we've played the variations on the single lift hi-hat. Maybe you've gone and hung out with some friends at this point and showed them a sweet beat that you can play. So, we're--now, what we're going to do we're just going to continue with out variations just like we do with the bass drum. Instead of just having that one lift in the bar, we're going to go ahead and put two in there just to kind of keep developing your skills with the hi-hat and strength and control and stuff like that, okay? So, the first kind of variation we'll do is the two beats--with the two lifts is putting the lift on the upbeat of two and the upbeat of four, all right? So, what does this mean? Well, obviously the lift is going to be on the upbeat of two like we said which means the stroke will be on the downbeat, that will be on three, and then another one on the upbeat of four and down on one, okay? So, your hi-hat's going to be coming down on beats one and beats three. So, what is this lining up with? This is lining up with your right hand which is doing 8th notes, one and two and three and four and. It's also lining up with your kick drum. Okay? This is beats one and three on the kick, okay? This is what it sounds like. All right?
