JOEL SIEGEL: Okay. So, what am I doing with my left foot to get that sound? Well, let's start, let's back up and I want to do--earlier, I said to pay attention to what my hands are doing so if you noticed, there's pretty much nothing different with my hands. I'm not changing--I don't have to hit a different area of the cymbal and I have to play a different rhythm or anything like that. My hands, my right hand--one and two and three and four, end. Okay? It's just--that's the steady 8th notes, okay? One and two and three and four and one and two and three and four, okay? Don't get thrown off by the sound. A lot of times when you're playing something and you move around the kit or you do something like this and the texture of the sound changes, sometimes it'll just kinda throw you off because it's not what you're used to hearing. So, don't let that throw you off. This is just the 8th notes in the right hand. So, more importantly what's happening with the left foot? Well, you can see that my foot is actually going down on beat one, okay? So, it's one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one, okay? So, it's going down on 1 but that's not what's getting our sound. It's the fact that it's open on which beat? It's open on the beat just before 1, right? In order to close it, I have to have it opened. So, it's open on that upbeat of four, okay? Listen again. One and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one, okay? So, one is the beat where my foot is coming back down and just as importantly, the upbeat of four is where my foot is releasing and going up. Alright? Think about it.
