Sharpening a Forstner Drill Bit

WILLIE: Hi, my name is Willie. I'm from Carson Saw Shop here in Eugene, Oregon and I've been sharpening tools here for 25, 30 years and I'm here with Expert Village today. This is another typical bit that a lot of people use. It's good for wood carving or cutting smooth holes in the wood. A lot of people use them on wood layers and stuff too. I have to sharpen these two inner cutters and touch to pile it up a little, and then, sharpen these two outside knife edges so. First, we'll get the inner part sharpened up. Now, it's pretty good. Then, I'll cut the top space. Touch up a little bit around the pilot, then I'll have to go over to a different machine to do this inside part. So anyway, come over here to this wheel, which is just totally exposed out in the open, that's where I can use it. That seems to be about right. Of course, after you've got these edges sharpened, they have a slight wire edge hanging out here, and we have to take that off with a hone stone. Just use a soft stone that you can buy at your hardware store, break that wire edge off, especially on that knife part on the outside edge. You can go in here and clean these up a little too. If you get these too much away from these, then this outside part will get hot and turn blue, so you want to keep these two edges real close, the cutting edge and the outside edge close together. But that one's completed.
