Secrets of Ballroom Dancing: Part 1
This is Emily Johnson on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, we will be talking about the first secret of ballroom dance. The first secret of ballroom dance is called your walking step. Your walking step is achieved by putting one foot in front of the other while pushing off of the back step, which allows you to move forward. This step is also done backwards similarly you are going to be stepping back and pushing off of the foot where you are leaving, your walking step backward. You can do this in both the ballroom and the Latin style. In the ballroom style as you step forward you will step with your heel first, making sure to release your toe, your heel hits to the ground first and pushing off of the foot that you are leaving, so make sure this is called a heel lead in your walking step. When you walk back in the ballroom dance you will be pointing your toe back, reaching with your toe and pushing off of the foot that you are leaving. Once again let show that ballroom dance walking step, making sure when you are walking forward to step forward with your heel and rolling through your foot every time your are talking a heel step first when you are going forward in the ballroom. When you are stepping backward in the ballroom you will be stepping with your toe first and rolling through your heel opposite of what you did on the way up. That is the ballroom walking step. In the Latin walking step, you will actually be walking forward with your toe first, keeping your toes in contact with the ground at all times and pushing off of the foot that your are leaving and it looks like this. Your toe comes forward, as soon as you feel like you want to lift your toe, just put the foot down and take your next step. When your are walking backwards it is very similar to the ballroom, you are going to be putting your toe first and you are going to be pushing off of the foot that your are leaving keeping your toes in contact at all times. Let’s try that one more time. This is walking step in the Latin style, starting forward with your toe as you push your toe forward push off of the back foot and it will allow you to move forward, keeping your toes in contact with the ground at all times and walking backwards your toes keep in contact. You can push with your toes, push with the foot that you are leaving as you go backward to make sure that you continue to make some distance and now that is your first secret to ballroom dance walking steps.
