Half & Whole Notes in Music Theory

Hey! I am Mark Black and I am here on expertvillage.com. I am here to talk to you about music theory and learning how to read music. Okay, now we want to talk about some other note values. We talked about, and I am writing down here so you can compare them, we talked about our quarter note equals, one equals one beat we need longer notes. So a half note is two beat. A half note is equal to the same length of time as two quarter note. Then notice that my half note is a hollow head… like some people we know. Alright and then we need another longer note value and we have a whole note it is just an ellipse, it last four beats. So, this is four beats, this is two beats and this is one beat. Now, lets just put this in some music I am not going to try to make this as a song, I am just showing you how this works in real music, we will come back to the rest in just a second.
