How to Play Drums: Beat 20

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So I'm going to play this downbeat of one and upbeat of two, adding in the hi-hat. Here we go at 70 beats per minute. Watch what my hands are doing, where my foot is lining up, and how that kind of comes off the snare drum, that two-&, all right? Check it out. All right? So I want you to go ahead and now play along, think about what's lining up. You just got your hi-hat and your kick drum--both times, actually--and then you have your snare, as always, lining up with your hi-hat on those two and four. I'll count you in. One, two, ready, play. All right? So there you go. You have that downbeat of one and the upbeat of two in the kick.
