How to Control the Room in Public Speaking

DON VARNEY: Hi, I'm Don Varney, founder of Varney Speaks, and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. As we've been talking today, responsibility has kind of thread its way through the conversation. In order to be a responsible person, you have to be someone that is absolutely going to be in control of your destiny. Someone that understands that there's more to life than just listening to what it is that you have to say. Take, for an example, we've got some friends of mine- MAN & WOMAN: [conversing loudly in the background] DON VARNEY: You know it's kinda funny. Hang on just a second. You're going to love this--just a second just a second. You're ready? I have some friends that I planted in the office, and in the front of the audience right here and they're having fun down here. They're messing with me right now, you know 'cause they don't realize that I know they're talking about going to lunch. How many of you here have heard their conversation about lunch? Oh, a few. Okay. Good. You and you, good! So where are you all taking us to lunch today? MAN: Gonna get some Mexican food. DON VARNEY: Gonna get some Mexican food. Well, you know what, give me about 4 more minutes, I'll be finished, and we'll take off and go. What do you think? WOMAN: Alright. MAN: Sounds good. DON VARNEY: Responsibility is something that you have to be responsible for. You have to be responsible for your actions just like these people were responsible for theirs. Well, let's move on from that and move in to the next topic as I close today.
