Irritable Habits in Public Speaking

DON VARNEY: Hi, I'm Don Varney, founder of Varney Speaks, and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. Now, let's talk a little bit about some of the things that we could say are irritable to a guy like me or someone that maybe a professional. Things that go, "Oh! Don't do that." You're making it tough on your audience. I think what happens is, a speaker will get up sometimes and, because maybe they're not prepared, there'll be a certain sense of nervousness in what it is that they're doing. They might show that nervousness in different ways. Let's take, for an example, we'll call him the "box person". Okay? This person is a person that'll stand up and talk and they'll step here and they'll be talking and then they'll step over here and they'll talk a little bit and then they'll step back here. Then they'll move over here. Then they'll step back up to the front. And guess what they're going to do for the next 20 minutes if that's how long they're speaking? They're going to step over here, step back here, step over here, step up here, and after a few moments of watching this, you're no longer hearing what that speaker says, you're only watching that guy go round and round and round in a little box wondering, "When are you going to stop?"
