How to Give a Speech Sitting Down

DON VARNEY: Hi, I'm Don Varney, founder of Varney Speaks, and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. When you're in a corporate training environment, there's going to be times that your speaking is actually going to be from the table as we are today. I'm going to be sitting here looking at my audience, speaking to them, controlling the pace, the tempo of the presentation, ensuring that they're getting the information that I'm going to be giving to them today. And then the other thing that we have to do is, "How do I maintain that control when I'm sitting in a board room with presidents and CEOs of companies who are used to being the one speaking?" You have to, through the use of your voice, be the dominant factor in that room. It doesn't mean yell and scream, being loud and all of that. No, it doesn't mean that at all. It means, if you're the expert, sound like an expert on it. If you have to do something as move away from the table because of the fact that what you're getting ready to do now is go to the board to do impact, you want to be able to just simply stand up, walk away from it. If your chair is in the way, just simply take a moment and slide your chair back, step over to the board and begin your presentation off of the board. If you have not written down on the board--in other words your board is a clean slate as this is, then remember some of the basic rules of corporate training in using a board is do not turn, face the board and write your point down talking to the board. Because number one, they can't see what you're writing. Number two, they're wondering why you're talking to the board and you're losing your audience. So when you go to the board, let them always see what you're writing. Try to keep as much contact on them as possible and try not to, when you turn to the board--learn that a pause is okay when you're writing something on the board. There's nothing wrong with a pause because it shows consideration for them.
