Hello my name is Dr. Susan Jewell. Now in this clip we are going to talk to you about how prostate cancer in the late stages can affect your sexual performance and your sexual desires. Now look at this diagram here that I have drawn for you. Let's orientate ourselves first. The blue area that is shaded is the prostate gland itself and behind it here is the colon so here is the rectal area opening here, this is the penis gland and the transfer from the prostate gland and the penis gland is the urethra. Here is the bladder in the superior position in respect to the prostrate gland and this is the front abdominal wall. Now when in the late stage the red area represents the prostate cancer itself and at a late stage of prostate cancer the tumor has grown to such an extent that it has totally obliterated the urethral tract so you are going to get all those symptoms that I had mentioned earlier about urinary problems and because of the cancer actually compressing and constricting the tract itself. Also when the cancer has grown to such an extent that it actually covers this large portion of the gland you are going to have other painful problems like pain when ejaculating or the inability to ejaculate because the tumor itself not only affects the urinary tract but it is going to affect all the muscular structures that surround the prostate gland or the muscular structures that affect the area around it to be able to cause you to have all these symptoms with ejaculation and problems to perform as well. So these are some of the other signs and symptoms that you should recognize and may point out that you may have prostate cancer. As I mentioned these signs and symptoms would be at a very late stage of prostate cancer and if you do have these particular problems you need to go and see a medical doctor so he can perform the diagnostic screening test to be able to rule in or rule out prostate cancer and if he rules out prostate cancer you might have other problems with the prostate gland that he can resolve and manage for you.
