Hello my name is Dr. Susan Jewell. Now in this clip we're going to talk about some risk factors that predisposes particular male to getting prostate cancer. Now, what are some of the risk factors have been found? Well, one of the most important factor is age. Now, you know prostate cancer can present at an earlier age, but obviously the older you get the more risk that you are, but especially over the age group of fifty. So, males at the fifty and over are at a very high increased risk of getting prostate cancer. And that is why it is recommended that when you're fifty or up you actually do a regular prostate exam by the physician. Another risk factor been shown is of course theres a strong association with family history. So, if you had an individual in your family like your father, grand father that's had a history of prostate cancer then more than likely that you are a higher risk than you know compared to the average male in the population who's not had a history of prostate cancer to get prostate cancer. And also of course personal history, if you already had a history of prostate cancer. Diet, diet often is an important factor, its been found that if you are in high fat people in high fatty diets, males and who are obese would be at an increased risk also of getting prostate cancer. And race, very strangely enough race, African-American males are at a higher risk than their counterparts, the Caucasians or ethnic Asians to get prostate cancer. And high levels of testosterone, the male hormone, also predisposes male, male at getting prostate cancer because it has been shown that testosterone, the hormone, actually stimulates the growth of the prostate gland.
