KIVETT BEDNAR: To play lick number eight in this Wes Montgomery solo, start by placing your ring finger on the 5th fret of the 2nd string, and your lick should sound like this [PLAYS LICK]. Altogether [PLAYS LICK]. So, we're on the G7 chord, which is the IV of this key, this blues key, and we're starting with our ring finger and I'm walking down chromatically from an E to a D sharp, to a D, and then going down one string to the 3rd string 4th fret, that's a B, and then down to the 4th string at the 5th fret at the G, and then walking down chromatically from there by half steps to an F sharp to an F. So, E, E flat, C--excuse me, E-E flat-D-B-G-G flat-F. And then, dropping down to minor 3rd to the 5th string 5th fret, and then going up a whole step to E, but playing it on the 4th string. So, what we're doing here is walking down from the 13 using this chromatic note as a--or this note here chromatically as a passing tone to get to the 5 of the chord, I mean, we're imposed over [PLAYS G7 CHORD]. We're superimposing this over G7, so, 5, 3, 1 and then walk down chromatically from the 1 to the dominant 7. And then down to the 5th, and then walk up from the 5th by a whole step to the 13 of the chord. So very slowly twice and then one time fast [PLAYS LICK], this should be [PLAYS LICKS].
