KIVETT BEDNAR: To play lick number three in the first chorus of Wes Montgomery's solo on "D-Natural Blues," we're going to start by placing our ring finger on the 7th fret of the 4th string, and the lick goes like this [PLAYS LICK]. However, we're going to be demonstrating the right hand. What I'd like you to do is instead of picking each note [PLAYS LICK PICKING EACH NOTE], alternating like some would have you do, or maybe you would naturally do; that's actually a slower way to do it. If you can, sweep downward with your pick [PLAYS LICK WITH SWEEP PICKING], you'll be able to do it a lot faster [PLAYS LICK WITH SWEEP PICKING] than I mean [PLAYS LICK PICKING EACH NOTE], there's jus [PLAYS LICK PICKING EACH NOTE]t--I mean, I guess you could practice it and get a lot better, but I'd have you sweep downward so that all of your strokes are downstrokes except for the last note, which is an A, and you can make that an upstroke.
