KIVETT BEDNAR: To play lick number three in the first chorus of Wes Montgomery's solo on "D-Natural Blues," place your ring finger on the 7th fret of the 4th string, and your lick should sound like this. So, we're going to break that down. You're starting on an A and you're going to bar upward, up the strings that is, past on the same fret on the 3rd and 2nd strings, and then all the way to the top string, and then just fall back one fret to the 5th fret of the top string. Now, I'm going to do that really slowly [PLAYS LICK]. So, it's just [PLAYS LICK], play it really, really slowly [PLAYS LICK]. Basically, what we're doing is outlining a D major triad in second inversion. Here, we've got the 5 of the chord 'cause we've gone from our I to our IV chord and now back to our I chord. And so, we're going to outline this D. There's the 5, the 1, the 3, the 13, and we're going to use that to resolve backwards to the 5th.
