How to Play Octaves on the Accordion

JUDE PARRY: On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Jude Parry. I'm with Gold Coast Theatre Company here in Miami Beach, and today we're going to be learning Beginning Accordion. And after doing "Over the Waves," there's something else that's--can be complicated. On the music, you'll see this symbol here sometimes, it's "8va." This means, one octave above or 8th notes. And just to give you a little bit of a background, the keyboard is segmented, set into eight sets of keys. So this is repeated again here. This is the same note. It sounds...lower and higher but it's still C. This is an octave lower and this is an octave higher. So you can play a piece of music, and when it has octave higher, then you play the same piece of music an octave higher. It sounds pretty complicated but don't worry, when we start getting to intermediate accordion play, you'll be able to see exactly what that means.
