Tire Traction Rating Tips

RICK GEISSLER: Hi, I'm Rick Geissler, expertvillage.com, coming to you from A&R Tire, talking about how to buy tires. When you're talking about tires and off-road tires in particular, it's very important to look at the traction. Self-cleaning cleats is important. So when you get that mud or snow in the tread, it continues to throw it out. The manufacturers of this make that, and the way they designed that block will allow that mud and snow to get thrown out so you can continue with your traction. There's nothing really--you can really spot it by looking at the tire, but check with the manufacturer and look at the literature on it. Self-cleaning cleats are very important for traction, because if you bog it down with mud or snow, you got a slick and you'll have no traction at all. Again when you're looking at passenger car tires, always read what the federal government's put on, your DOT numbers. You're looking at temperature and traction. Temperature, the best you can get is AA. A, AA is 150% better than A. B, A is 150% better than B, and C is the minimum standard by federal Law.
