Online Photography Course: Upper Body Poses

Hello, my name is Chris Conklin on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this segment we will be going over different aspects on how to properly take a good headshot. Now when we were talking about leaning an object, typically we were looking at a 45 degree angle. See, like this, I’m at a 45 degree angle to the camera, and I am not flat on. You can see a profile, my shoulders are dipped, I have got my hand over on my knee, and this arm resting this way, and this actually creates some depth between me, the background and the objects that are around me. Now if I was just sitting flat like this, you can kind of see exactly what I am talking about, it appears boring, it is just there, there is nothing of excitement to it; and another thing that you do not want to do is have a bunch of slouching. You have got a lot of people who say okay take my picture I am ready…. that does not do anything for anybody either. So you can pick a side, you can lean forward, tilt the head slightly, drop it down, look like that, you can smile and different things like that. Now there are various aspects between taking pictures, the head movements between males and females. If you have your object at a 45 degree angle, or at an angle whatsoever…now leaning towards the camera of this nature, that is more of a feminine type of pose. Now leaning away from the camera is more of a masculine type of pose. So typically, you want to have your male subjects leaning away from the camera, and maybe a slight tilt on the opposite end; your females, you want them leaning towards the camera watching the heads, the tilts back and forth, the chins up and down.
