Guide to Clarinet Care & Maintenance

For expertvillage.com this is Mitch Kaplan. In this clip we will be talking about taking care of your clarinet and storing it away. This is what you should do when you are putting your clarinet away. You want to make sure that when you take it apart, you take the mouthpiece off, and you take a mouthpiece cup and you push the mouthpiece down, angle it down, so that the reed does not break. Now you can take the reed off, many people do that, many musicians do that and they clean the mouthpiece that way. You can take a Q-Tip and you can swab out all these materials that build up, and you get it all the nice and gooky and there you go, it is all disgusting. So then you cleaned it out or you could take a cloth and you could put it through there as well. The next step when you put away your clarinet is you take off the barrel. The barrel again can be taken and swabbed through with a cleaner, that you can buy of course through a music store, and then you would put the barrel away. The next thing is when you take apart your clarinet you again would have to put your finger over this, the first spring key, lifting this key up this way when you turn it, you would not bend it, and you wiggle it off and you have two separate parts. You would also of course take the swab and put it in like so, and that absorbs the moisture from the saliva that was produced. Then you have the bell, and you put that in your case; and then you have the other part of the body, and you again take the swab that you have; that you can of course buy and purchase, and again it takes the moisture out of the body. The next thing that you should know, for caring about your clarinet, is that you do not want to put music and fold it on top of your keys, because the keys can bend and will prevent you from having a great sound.
