A Guide to Being a Playwright

STEVE CAVERNO: I'm Steve Caverno on behalf of Expert Village, here today to talk to you about building a character. Now, let's summarize what we've gone over with character. We've gone over the types of characters: the protagonist, the antagonist, the supporting cast. We've gone over how to develop a character with biographies and important information. We've gone over what a character does, the objectives, what drives a character. We've also gone over antiheroes, characters who are antagonist that we sometimes root for perhaps, and in the method of looking in a character, we can see how all these things come up to shape something where it's interesting for an actor to play. And you want to attract the actor, and so the more complex the character is, the more success you're going to have attracting actors to your plays, which will help you be--will help you have a successful play. A lot of times in films, you have the name attached to the project before the project even gets going. So--and this is similar to theater. You want to attract the best actors you can. And if you have a show that's known for having really great characters, it will be produced again and again because people want to be in it, people want to see it. That is how having compelling characters can help you have a successful play.
