History of the Clarinet Family

For expertvillage.com this is Mitch Kaplan. In this clip we will be talking about history and what are the materials that the clarinet is made of. The first thing that we would like mention is that the clarinet is made out of a grindelia, which is an African black wood. There are several types of materials that the clarinet can be made of, and that is the ebonite, plastic, or the metal. The next thing that I would like to mention is that that are different sounds of the clarinet, you can get an A flat clarinet, an E flat and A and an alto in E flat and then we heard the B flat contrabass. All these have still the same written range, the low E to the triple high C. Next, the first person that created a similar type of instrument to the clarinet, its descendant called the shalamo was created by man named Johann Christoph Dunner, and he lived from 1655 to 1707. Later on, three gentlemen got together and, basically, they came up with the system that we know it as today. This was Louis Agusta Buffet, Closet, and Theobald Bohem; and these three got together and built the first clarinet in the early 1800. Manufacturers are still trying to improve the system, and have been doing it by maybe extending the barrel or using different materials for the pads; and this done strictly to enhance the sound and to provide a better playing possibility for the professional musician.
