Hi, Christi Ferretti with Expert Village. I want to talk to you today a little about leafy vegetables, romaine lettuce, leaf lettuce, cabbages. When your choosing these you want to make sure they are crisp. You want make sure they are stored properly in the grocery store, in a cool place. Again, watch out for that crushed ice because it is going to freeze all the moisture in here. This basically just loaded with water. When you put that on ice it's going to crystallize and it's going to turn into something mushy by the time you get it home. But you do want to look for crispness. You want make sure you hear that snap when you crack it. You also want to beware of a lot of this. You are going get some of it, it is a delicate vegetable. It's got to travel typically long distances for most people. So, you are going to have little bit of brown areas. But you want to make sure that is not throughout. In particular, with like a romaine lettuce you can see how this is starting to brown right here. Sometimes when you look in the stores they are bundled up in the whole head. But, there is just a lot of brown throughout that whole stem section. You really don't want that. Also, in looking at a cabbage, same thing. You will have a little bit of brown on it. But, you want make sure you see these nice dark outer leaves. As the cabbage gets older and these leaves start to show their age. The grocery store is going to pull those off. So you are going to end up seeing more of lighter skin or lighter leaf parts of the cabbage. That just means it's been there longer. Which is going to mean that the inside when you get it home is going to be drier. So just be smart. Look at it, feel it, touch it. Look for some crispness. Feel free to crack it. Take that piece home, snack on it in the cart. Just be smart when buying your leafy vegetables.
