How to Pick Ripe Tomatoes

Hi, Christi Ferretti here to talk to you about tomatoes today. I wish I had better examples for you. But that leads me to a very important point. And that is shopping seasonally an shopping locally is very very important. Tomatoes are a fruit, and especially a summer fruit. And they are typically going to be better in the summer months. They are going to have a better color, and a better flavor. Although modern technology has allowed us to have tomatoes year round. But what I'm about to talk about, is how they get to you. And what that is, is they are actually picked green most of the time and they are gassed. And that's how they turn ripe when they get to the store. If you are going to be shopping locally and shopping seasonally they are going to be red, they are going to be vine ripened. They are going to be flesh, juicy and more flavorful. And when you are looking for a tomato, check for the firmness. They should not be soft to the touch, just barely depress under your touch. And make sure they don't have any mushy spots in them. Also look for a consistent red color. A tomato should also be stored in a cool place. Not in a refrigerator and not on ice. So make sure you check your grocery store and see how they are being stored. And that's going to give you a better product in the end.
