How to Pick Fresh Bag Lettuce

Hi, Christi Ferretti with Expert Village. How many bags of pre-cut, pre-cleaned lettuce have you thrown away? I know for me, lots. When you are buying these vegetables, it is a matter of convenience. And if you are going to take these homes that night it is probably going to be a good option. But when picking it up, make sure you look closely. A lot of times they have you the buy one get one free, or reduced for quick sale. Be a little leery. Because you can see here, this one's all ready got some condensation in the bag. Some of the leaves have all ready gotten kind of wet and mushy. That's going to be some bacteria growing in there that can possibly make you sick. But it?s also not going to be a very fresh, very crispy salad. Especially with these light very leafy greens, like the mixed greens. You want to make sure you look in the bag. They are pretty bouncy, there is air in there, there is room for them to move around. And that all of the leaves themselves look nice and crisp. There's not any brown spots. And again, probably the most important thing is, look for that liquid. Make sure there's no liquid in the bag. Make sure, again, that there is a lot of air, a lot of movement, and that everything looks fresh. These items are also dated. I think that its very important that you check that date. They are not meant to hang out in your refridgerator for weeks and weeks. Again, quick sale, ease convenience. Take them home, use them right, at that day, maybe the next at the latest.
