What Clarinet Accessories Are Necessary

For expertvillage.com this is Mitch Kaplan. In this clip we will be talking about accessories. The next thing that I would like to talk about, the next accessory, is the strap. Now straps are available for clarinets. They have different material, this is more rubbery; it feels much better than a very single cloth strap, where it is just made out of this material. It goes around your neck, and there is for the bass clarinet, there is a hook that you would pull and then it would clip into the base clarinet. For the regular clarinet, it fits over the thumb rest, and that is basically all there is for the strap. Moving right along there, is the lyre, and I am not calling you all a liar, but that is the name, because this is in the shape of a lyre and it fits over the barrel. And then you would put the mouthpiece right here; and you would use a lyre if you are in a marching band. The next thing that I would like to talk about the next accessory is the music stand. There are several types of music stands, there is the straight black one, it comes in one piece, and it is a much sturdier music stand, and I highly recommend those, but if you are on the run, and you are really quick and need to do something quick, we have the portable stand, which comes in two different pieces. We have the top portion, which fits over here and then you put down the stand, and you can raise it up by lifting this lever and there is a pole inside, which extends so you can read the music if you are in need. These are a little wobbly, and if you are outside the wind can blow them down, so make note of that, that is an important factor. Another main factor is if you are a doubler. A doubler is a person who plays more than one instrument, such as the saxophone and the clarinet and the flute or all, most saxophonists do play all three and you would need a stand to hold your instruments. These are pegs, that is a screw in to the stand, and you would mount the clarinet right on top, and it would hold it up, and this is also is a place for your saxophone right here, and one for your flute, and that is really all there is to the accessories of a clarinet.
