STEVE CAVERNO: Hi. My name is Steve Caverno on behalf of Expert Village, and today I'll be talking to you about playwriting basics. So let's discuss some of the things we've learned so far. We've gone over some of the different types of theater, the lengths, the genres, the places where theater might be set, some of the different budgetary concerns you might have, and some sources of inspiration. Also, one of the best sources of inspiration, a reading place. This guy right here is a master, William Shakespeare, unarguably the best playwright who ever lived. If you read through some of his plays, you can get a sense of how plays are constructed and how beautiful dialogue is written. Now, sometimes, William Shakespeare's plays are a little hard to understand. For that, I recommend picking up a Shakespeare Made Easy or Simply Shakespeare or also cliff notes. They'll allow you to read the text in American English, and that way you can understand some of the hard-to-understand elements of Shakespeare. So then, you can be adept and you can read a brand new Shakespeare play without even having to refer to the text. And also, "The Collected Plays of Neil Simon." Neil Simon is probably the most produced playwright in community theater where you can go check out a lot of the plays. This is one of the best arenas to catch theater, and Neil Simon is one of the best. He has some great comedies. He has some great elements of drama in his plays, and so I definitely recommend his work as well. So, thank you for listening to this lesson.
