Introduction to the Jack Plane

Hi, this is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip I would be answering the question what is a jack plane. A jack plane is a general purpose bench plane. Typically it is just used for general smoothing of the edges and sizing of stock. Jack planes would usually measure about 15 inches long and the blade usually has a moderately curved edge on it. Now they call it a jack plane because it is related to the same jack of all trades meaning that this a general purpose plane and you can use it in many many applications. Lastly, jack planes are the steel equivalent to the wood block plane.
