Learn About the Single-Pole, Double-Throw Switch for Circuit Bending

AMANDA CLAIRE: So, you might also want a switch that doesn't just turn the function on or off, but maybe it allows you to select between different functions. And so for that, you want what's known as a double-throw switch, right? And double throw means that even though you might have only one set of contact points, right? So this is still a single-pole switch, it's got three terminals, but that's because you got 2 options that you can put the switch at. So you'll always have 1 wire in the middle and then you'll have a wire over and a wire over here, and when this switches to one side, you're completing this circuit. And when your switch is on the other side, you're completing the other circuit. And some of these switches have a center position where neither circuit is completed, okay? So this is a single-pole-double-throw switch. And so, this is used for selecting either/or. And like I say, some of them do have that off position in the middle. I don't think--here's some little ones. They are single pole, double throw, so they are either/or switches, but I don't think these have that--no, they don't feel like they have off position in the middle. So these are good for, when you have a bend and you want to either have it one way or the other, but you don't want to turn it off, okay? So that's when you might want to go with a single pole, double throw switch like this one.
