Rounds of Betting Strategies for Poker

I am Joe Marshall with Expert Village.com and today we are going to learn how to win at poker. In draw poker, the type of poker we are talking about today, there is only two rounds of betting. If you are playing seven card stud or Texas Holdem, there is actually several rounds of betting but for this we are only going to discuss the two. After you ante, the dealer deals each person five card hand, they look at their hand and the first round of betting begins. Say for example the player to your left bets, passes the bet along to you. If you want to stay in and not get out of the game, you have to match his bet or raise it. In this case, I will just match it. And that is actually the first round of betting. After that you determine how many cards you would like to get rid off out of your five card hand. Say if you have two of a kind and you only want to get rid of one card in that case and after the cards have been discarded, you get your new cards the second round of betting ensues and everybody wants to stay in, everybody just matches bets. And then when you get to this point, it is called the showdown and each player is going to reveal their hand but the player that bet last is going to reveal it first and that is usually where the game gets kind of confusing. Most people think it just goes in a clockwise fashion, but its actually the person that was raised or called on that shows his hand first. The reason why is if they laid down a great hand that you cannot beat, you don’t need to show him your hand. Most of the time in poker everybody will just lay their hands down in unison and that is really bad because it will let you see if people were bluffing or if people had great hands. So it’s important that when the showdown comes, that actual hands are laid down in the proper order.
