Soy Margarine, Tofu, & Yeast as Staple Foods for Vegan Diets

WHITNEY TESLER: Hi, my name is Whitney Tesler on behalf of Expert Village and I'm here to talk to you about how to become a vegan. We're about to go raid my fridge. Let's see here. The first key ingredient, Earth Balance. I use this every day. It turns many people on to this, vegan or not. It's just soy margarine. It's not hydrogenated so it means there are no trans fats in there. It's really healthy for you, no cholesterol obviously, and it tastes really, really good; so, that, I use all the time. Tofu, second thing I use all the time. SoyBoy is my favorite because it's local here in Rochester. I use the Extra Firm. It's really good for making stir fries or tofu scramblers. It's excellent for breakfast, just add a few spices in it, so you can season it with whatever you want it. It's really good, and protein. Another thing is nutritional yeast and this is also one of my favorite ingredients. I don't know if you can see but it's kind of compressed in here. But it's yeast that grows and it's high in vitamins and minerals especially the B vitamins which some vegans don't get a lot of, and it's really good. It substitutes cheese. It has a cheesy flavor and you can use it in making mac and cheese. I like to sprinkle it on popcorn with a little Earth Balance and hot sauce; that's one of my favorite little treats. You can use it as parmesan cheese on spaghetti and sauce and frozen meatballs are really good. So, that's another one of my favorites.
