How to Solder the Wires & Test the Switch for Circuit Bending

AMANDA CLAIRE: All right, now we have our wire, our little hook on the end of the tinned wire in the other contact of the switch. So now we're going to solder it like we did with the other one. Remember, good soldering technique is when you keep the tip of your soldering iron clean of soot and solder. Then we're going to bring it over and--see there we go it's getting nice and it's a little bit solder clinging to it and that's not too bad. So, remember, then what you're going to do is heat the metal component and let the solder flow over it. So I'm going to do that here, I got it. And actually I've got it right kind of between the switch terminal and the wire, so it's heating both the wire and the component. Now, all we gotta do is just touch my little coil and solder in there, and it's just beautifully, just kind of flows right into it and there we are done. And now we'll do that with the other wire--where did it go? It was just here, here we go, other wire, okay. Do a quick tinning at the end of the wire, just by--here we go. I mean, it just happens right away, we're just kind of heat the wire up near solder and boom, it just goes. There it is. Let it cool down a little bit, so you don't burn yourself, make a little hook shape, there we go. And then we're going to put that into the other terminal now, get that kind of hooked in there. And this will be the last joint we make on this particular switch actually. I find that sometimes working on a circuit bending project is kind of like--I know it's like doing brain surgery in a way, and it is in the sense that you're dealing with the brain of your device, the circuit itself, but I don't know. Sometimes you really need a steady hand and kind of have to go in, and do some pretty detailed things. Okay, so we're now ready to solder that second wire on the switch; this will be the last one that we'll do. I'm putting the iron on the switch and on the component...I'm sorry, on the component and on the wire, getting it really hot, we're just going to touch solder into there and it just--look, just beautifully kind of flows right into it and there's our joint. And those are permanent joints and that's what make us happy.
