How to Solder the Wire to the Audio Jack for Circuit Bending

AMANDA CLAIRE: All right. So let's install one of these wires. So I've got a wire. The end has been tinned, all right? I got a nice little coating of solder on it. I've got a component. The side of it has been tinned also. I made sure not to close up that little hole 'cause we're going to wanna--we're going to need to use that hole. Basically, what I'm going to do is I'm going to stick the tin end of this wire into the hole made by that component and this is actually big enough where I don't need to use pliers. But what you want to do, if you can, is try to do a little bend or a little wraparound. This is--this one happens to be big enough where I can kinda do it with just a little kind of maybe the end of the screwdriver as long as you can do it with your finger. Obviously, the metal and the solder isn't hot right now but what I've kinda done is I sort of looped it around, kind of closed it. And so I basically kinda made a hook shape out of that wire through that hole in that component. And so now, that would stay in place, except now I need to solder it and make it permanent. So I'm going to bring this over here. Soldering iron, clean the tip. Always keep the tip clean. It seems like a tedious, boring thing but your soldering will go a lot more smoothly and will look a lot better and your connections will be a lot cleaner if you just keep your tip clean. So what I'm going to do here is, again, going to hold it onto the component and if the wire is not going to spring away because it's hooked. And then, once it all gets hot, I touch the solder to it right there and the solder kinda flows, just kinda like liquid. And what--it's done now. And now, we're done. And now, what's happened is that metal has flowed over both the tin wire and the tin part of the component and when that hardens up and cools, we have a nice permanent joint. And so that's one out of the four joints we're going to have to make to install that jack, right? So you'll have one--two joints on the jack and then two joints on the speaker, one at each of the two contacts.
