Question Nate: How come you don't "pack" the grease into the bearing? I use the palm method and also what kind of grease are you using?

How to Apply New Grease to Bearings

Hi my name is Nate McCullough on behalf of Expert Village. In these clips we're going to talk about the proper way to repack , grease, and adjust your vehicle's wheel bearings. In this clip we're going to talk about the proper way to repack and lubricate your vehicle's wheel bearings, brake rotor, and spindle. What I have here is my trusty old grease gun. What I'm going to do is apply some grease to my finger for this step, right there. Lubricate the mating surface, right there. You don't need a whole bunch in this area just a light film. You can see all I used was one pump of grease, just a tad more. Lubricate the seal surface as well. Get another pump of grease. We're going to lubricate races of our brake rotor. This extremely shiny surface. That's been machine polished. Take my grease, get a nice film on there. Do the other side. Just like so. Take a couple pumps and put it on the inside. The empty cavity of the rotor so it's got a little extra, right inside here. In the empty space between the races we're going to take and put a nice gob in there. Once we have that done we can go ahead and move to our wheel bearings. This is your bearing. These are called tapered rollers. They actually sit apposed to each other, like so. You can see the angles they're at, they are approximately 30 degree angles. That will make it so the vehicle can be tightened down and there won't be any play on the wheel. Take another shot of grease. They have a million and a half tools for packing wheel bearings. All of them are just a toy. These bearings rotate, like so, which makes them self lubricating. If you put grease on the outside of it it's going to work on into the inside of it during your installation. Like I said they have a whole bunch of tools for it, all of them are just boy toys, another thing you can out in your toolbox. Lubricate it just like so, give it a couple of spins. What that spinning action will do is work the grease into the inside of the rollers. This one is done, set her down right here. We're going to grab our inboard bearing. That is the proper way to lubricate your wheel bearings, your vehicle's spindle, and the brake rotor.
