How to Remove Brake Calipers on Cars

Hi my name is Nate McCullough on behalf of Expert Village. In the following clips we're going to talk about the proper way to repack, grease and adjust your vehicles wheel bearings. In this clip we're going to talk about removing the brake caliper. We are going to have to compress the caliper piston in order to release some of the hydraulic pressure and give us room to actually slide the caliper off. As your brakes wear and they will every time you stop you loose a little bit of material a lip will be developed on the edge of your rotor. And if you just try and slide the caliper off your brake pads will grab that lip and it can damage your friction surface. What I'm going to do is take my screw driver and apply a marginal amount of inward pressure. Alright as you can see my rotor is real free spinning now. That means I've removed enough pressure that I'll be able to slide this off once I hammer out my retaining hardware. The service procedure is going to vary widely depending upon the particular make and model. This happens to be a Ford and almost all Ford trucks with this body style have hammer in retaining apparatuses. I'm not even quite sure what you would call these. Personally I'm a huge fan of bolts, there's nothing better than nuts and bolts. Like I said this is particular only to Fords of this make and model ford 150's, explorers and things of that nature. And the same thing for the bottom. For the sake of video I'm not going to replace these, I don't have any on hand however it is my professional opinion whenever these are removed you purchase new ones and reinstall. Once you have the hardware removed and the caliper pressed you can go ahead and remove it. I like to go ahead and set my caliper up on top and pull out my in board brake pad and take and set it right inside there.
